If you have ever heard the term “social group” and wondered what that actually looks like for your child, you are not alone.

Many parents imagine children sitting together, being taught how to socialize or practice scripts for conversation. At Express Yourself Pediatric Therapy, social groups look very different. They are active, engaging, and rooted in real interactions rather than instruction alone.

A social group at EYT is a small, therapist-supported group where children build communication, connection, regulation, and flexibility through shared experiences. Rather than teaching social skills in isolation, we create opportunities for children to experience them in meaningful, supported ways.
During a group, children might build something together, create imaginative play scenarios, or engage in games that naturally require cooperation. These moments allow therapists to support skills like turn-taking, expanding ideas, and working together toward a shared goal.

Movement is also an important part of many groups. In our gym spaces, children might navigate obstacle courses, participate in group games, or practice coordinating their bodies in a structured but fun way. These activities support regulation, impulse control, and body awareness, all of which are essential for social engagement.

One of the most important aspects of our groups is what happens in real time. When challenges come up—such as two children wanting the same item or a game not going as expected—we do not step in with scripted solutions. Instead, we support children in expressing their thoughts, understanding others, and working through the situation together. These are the moments where the most meaningful learning occurs.

Communication support is naturally embedded throughout the group. Depending on the child, this might include expanding language, supporting alternative communication systems, encouraging initiation, or helping with conversational flow. Because these skills are practiced within real interactions, they are more likely to generalize outside of therapy.

Our approach is neuroaffirming and relationship-based. We do not expect children to mask or conform to a single way of interacting. Instead, we support authentic communication, honor each child’s unique style, and focus on building connection in a way that feels safe and respectful.

Social groups can be especially helpful for children who find peer interactions challenging, feel overwhelmed in group settings, have difficulty with flexibility, or need support with emotional regulation and communication. Over time, families often notice increased confidence, more engagement with peers, and greater ease in navigating social situations.

At Express Yourself Pediatric Therapy, we believe that social development happens through connection, shared experiences, and play—not pressure.
If you are considering whether a social group might be a good fit for your child, we would be happy to talk with you and help guide that decision.
