IEP season is underway, and for many families, this time of year can bring a mix of anticipation and uncertainty. At Express Yourself Therapy, we want to remind you that you are not alone—and that preparation, knowledge, and partnership can make all the difference.

An Individualized Education Program (IEP) meeting should always be a strength-based, collaborative conversation. Your child is more than a list of challenges—they bring unique abilities, interests, and potential to the table. Setting the tone early by emphasizing strengths helps the entire team build a plan that truly supports meaningful growth—academically, socially, and emotionally.

You are an essential member of the IEP team. Parents, caregivers, and outside providers are not just invited—they are valued contributors. Your perspective helps ensure the plan reflects the whole child, not just what is seen in the classroom.

Here are some ways to feel confident and empowered this IEP season:
• Start with strengths – Share what your child does well, what motivates them, and what brings them joy.
• Ask questions freely – If something isn’t clear, keep asking until it makes sense. You deserve full understanding.
• Request data and examples – Ask how goals are measured and how progress will be tracked.
• Review drafts ahead of time – This allows you to process information without pressure and come prepared.
• Bring support – Another adult can help take notes, ask questions, and provide reassurance.
• Follow up in writing – After meetings, summarize what was discussed to ensure alignment and clarity.

If your child is being recommended for a placement change, it is critical to observe the proposed setting in person. Watching how the classroom functions, how staff interact with students, and how your child might fit into that environment can provide invaluable insight. Never feel rushed into making a decision without seeing it firsthand.

Being proactive can make a big difference:
• Keep a running list of concerns, questions, and wins throughout the year
• Communicate regularly with teachers and providers—not just at IEP time
• Request a meeting early if you feel changes are needed
• Think ahead about long-term goals, independence, and life skills

At Express Yourself Therapy, we believe strongly that it takes a village to support a child’s success—and we are honored to be part of yours.

Our EYT therapists are available to:
• Attend IEP meetings alongside you for support and advocacy
• Review IEP drafts before meetings and help you prepare
• Collaborate directly with school teams to ensure consistency across settings
• Provide insight into speech, language, social communication, and emotional regulation needs

We proudly partner with families and schools throughout Cook and Lake County, including Palatine, Arlington Heights, Schaumburg, Hoffman Estates, Rolling Meadows, Wheeling, Buffalo Grove, and Inverness. We also collaborate with private schools, ensuring support follows your child wherever they learn.
You don’t have to navigate IEP season alone. With the right preparation, the right team, and the right support, this process can be empowering—and even transformative—for your child and your family.
