How to Know When Your Child May Benefit From Pediatric Therapy

Oct 05, 2026

Every child develops at their own pace. Some children need a little extra support along the way, while others may benefit from ongoing therapy to help them communicate, move, play, learn, regulate, eat, or participate more independently in everyday life.

Every child develops at their own pace. Some children need a little extra support along the way, while others may benefit from ongoing therapy to help them communicate, move, play, learn, regulate, eat, or participate more independently in everyday life.

At Express Yourself Pediatric Therapy (EYT), we believe therapy should focus on the whole child. Our approach is play-based, individualized, strengths-focused, and designed to help children build skills in ways that feel meaningful to them and their families.

With locations in Palatine, Illinois and Kensington, Maryland, as well as telehealth services, EYT provides pediatric therapy and developmental support to families throughout our surrounding communities.

When Should I Consider Pediatric Therapy for My Child?

Parents often wonder whether a concern is something their child will simply “grow out of” or whether an evaluation might be helpful.

There is not always one obvious sign that a child needs therapy. Sometimes concerns are subtle. You may notice that everyday activities seem harder for your child than they are for other children their age.

An evaluation may be helpful if your child is experiencing challenges with:

  • Speech clarity or pronunciation

  • Expressing thoughts, wants, or ideas

  • Understanding language or following directions

  • Social communication and interacting with peers

  • Using an AAC device or another form of communication

  • Fine motor skills, handwriting, dressing, or self-care

  • Sensory processing or emotional regulation

  • Coordination, balance, strength, or gross motor development

  • Feeding, chewing, swallowing, or trying new foods

  • Executive functioning, organization, attention, or task completion

  • Participating successfully in preschool, school, home, or community activities

Sometimes families also seek therapy because they know their child would benefit from additional opportunities to practice social skills, independence, flexible thinking, communication, or motor skills in a supportive environment.

Speech and Language Therapy

Communication involves much more than producing sounds correctly.

Our speech-language pathologists work with children in areas such as speech sound development, receptive and expressive language, social communication, literacy-related language skills, AAC, fluency, and feeding.

A child might benefit from a speech-language evaluation if they have difficulty being understood, finding words, answering questions, telling stories, following directions, communicating with peers, or expressing themselves effectively.

At EYT, communication is supported in a way that respects each child's individual communication style. Spoken language, gestures, signs, pictures, and AAC can all be meaningful forms of communication.

Occupational Therapy

Occupational therapy helps children participate more successfully in the activities that make up their daily lives.

For children, these “occupations” include playing, learning, getting dressed, eating, writing, participating in school, managing sensory experiences, and becoming more independent.

Our occupational therapists may work on areas including:

  • Fine motor development

  • Visual-motor skills

  • Handwriting

  • Sensory processing

  • Self-regulation

  • Dressing and self-care

  • Motor planning

  • Attention and participation

  • Play skills

  • Daily living skills

Therapy sessions are designed to be active and engaging so children can practice important skills through movement, play, and meaningful activities.

Physical Therapy

Pediatric physical therapy can support children who have difficulty with strength, balance, coordination, endurance, mobility, or gross motor skills.

Physical therapy may address skills such as running, jumping, climbing stairs, navigating playground equipment, riding a bike, or participating in sports and physical activities.

Our goal is not simply to practice isolated movements. We want children to feel more confident and capable participating in the activities that matter to them.

Feeding Therapy

Mealtimes can become stressful when a child has a very limited diet, difficulty chewing, trouble transitioning between textures, oral-motor challenges, or strong sensory responses to food.

Feeding therapy looks beyond simply encouraging a child to “take another bite.”

Our team considers sensory preferences, oral-motor skills, positioning, communication, regulation, routines, and the child's overall relationship with food.

We work collaboratively with families to make feeding goals realistic, supportive, and functional.

Social-Emotional and Executive Function Support

Children sometimes have the language and academic skills they need but still struggle with managing emotions, starting tasks, handling changes, organizing themselves, navigating friendships, or recovering when something unexpected happens.

EYT offers opportunities to support social-emotional development and executive functioning through individual services and group programs.

Depending on a child's needs, therapy may focus on flexible thinking, self-advocacy, problem solving, perspective taking, emotional awareness, planning, organization, task initiation, or peer interaction.

Learning Through Play

Children learn best when they are engaged.

That is why play is such an important part of therapy at Express Yourself Pediatric Therapy.

A therapy session might involve climbing, swinging, building, pretending, creating art, playing games, cooking, exploring sensory materials, completing an obstacle course, or interacting with peers.

Behind every playful activity is a clinical goal.

When children are motivated and comfortable, therapists can create opportunities to practice communication, motor skills, regulation, social interaction, problem solving, and independence in ways that feel natural.

Therapy Beyond Individual Sessions

Some children benefit from practicing skills with other children rather than only during individual therapy.

EYT offers programming that may include social groups, executive functioning groups, movement-based groups, therapeutic preschool experiences, and other specialized programs throughout the year.

Our Expresskins therapeutic preschool program provides young children with opportunities to build communication, play, social-emotional, motor, and early learning skills in a supportive small-group environment.

Group settings also give children the opportunity to practice skills in situations that more closely resemble preschool, school, friendships, and everyday life.

Telehealth Pediatric Therapy

For some children and families, therapy from home can be an excellent option.

EYT also provides telehealth services when appropriate.

Telehealth can be especially helpful for families who live farther from one of our clinics, have busy schedules, want caregivers more involved in sessions, or have children who feel most comfortable learning in their home environment.

Depending on the child and service, telehealth sessions may focus on speech and language, executive functioning, social communication, caregiver coaching, home routines, or other functional goals.

A Collaborative Approach to Pediatric Therapy

Children do not develop skills in isolation.

Communication can affect behavior. Sensory regulation can affect language. Motor skills can affect play. Executive functioning can affect school participation. Feeding can be influenced by sensory, motor, medical, and emotional factors.

For that reason, EYT takes a collaborative approach.

When appropriate, our speech-language pathologists, occupational therapists, physical therapists, social-emotional providers, educators, and families work together to understand the whole child rather than focusing only on one isolated skill.

We also value collaboration with teachers, physicians, school teams, and other professionals involved in a child's care.

You Don't Have to Wait Until a Concern Becomes a Major Problem

Parents sometimes hesitate to pursue an evaluation because they are unsure whether their child's challenges are “significant enough.”

An evaluation does not automatically mean that your child needs ongoing therapy.

Sometimes an evaluation provides reassurance. Other times, it identifies a few specific areas where additional support could make everyday life easier.

If you have questions about your child's communication, motor development, sensory processing, feeding, social-emotional development, executive functioning, or participation in daily activities, our team at Express Yourself Pediatric Therapy would be happy to help you determine the next step.

EYT provides pediatric therapy from our clinics in Palatine, Illinois and Kensington, Maryland, with services for families throughout Palatine, Arlington Heights, Buffalo Grove, Schaumburg, Rolling Meadows, Silver Spring, Bethesda, Kensington, surrounding communities, and through telehealth.
